Volunteering

Accommodation and Expenses

Accommodation is off site as Camp Coconut has no facilities for Volunteers. We recommend a small guest house nearby on the beach at Sai Ram Bay. This costs rps 1,500 per night including breakfast. The rooms are double with separate bathroom,. and some have a kitchenette attached. Each cabana looks directly onto the beach and is wonderfully peaceful.

Camp Coconut does not usually provide meals except when we are providing a meal of rice and curry for a visiting group of children coming for the day. Tea and coffee making facilities will be made available during the day and also a small fridge to keep cold drinks. There are many little shops a short walk from the camp selling all manner of fruits and vegetables, drinks, bread and pastries and cooked food. Most necessary items are available locally but a short bus/3 wheeler ride to Matara makes supermarkets and all other kinds of shops available.

Apart from money for accommodation and an evening meal expenses are very low. Eating out is very cheap locally and train and bus rides for sightseeing are minimal. We recommend bringing dollars and a credit card. American dollars are easy to change and accepted everywhere. Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted although shops still often only take cash. There is a currency exchange counter at the airport which offers a good exchange rate for currency conversions. There are ATMs at the airport in Colombo, Matara and all the major towns.

Please note that Camp Coconut is a charity which is entirely dependent upon the generosity of donors and we try to keep expenses to a minimum.
