Volunteering
Thank you for considering giving your time and energy to work with the Children at Camp Coconut. There are many ways in which you can get involved in both the ongoing children’s activities and in the building and maintaining of the site and its facilities.
We do expect that volunteers who work with the children have a natural aptitude in working with children preferably with previous experience. We also ask that you raise money before you come to donate to the ongoing work at Camp Coconut. There is no set fee but we suggest somewhere in the region of £500.
Areas in which you can put your skills to good use include:
- Working directly with the children supervising play and organising and leading games.
- Working in the Montessori school.
- Sports. Camp Coconut has facilities for Cricket with Cricket nets, basketball, volleyball, badminton and table tennis. Also there is a small area in which to play football with two goals. The children are delighted when games are organised and when they are given coaching.
- Dance/drama. Both the daycentre and outside areas can be used for this. Sri Lankan children love to dance and are very skilled at their own national dance.
- Art. We welcome teachers of all forms of art.
- English language teaching.
- PC training/computer skills
- Music tuition. We have an assortment of Sri Lankan drums and a couple of learner guitars.
There are also other areas where volunteers can help;
- Initiating an organic garden and teaching children how to maintain it.
- Horticulture. Improving the grounds of Camp Coconut and teaching children how to grow and maintain indigenous plants and trees.
- Bicycle repair workshop. Teaching children how to maintain bikes using the existing bikes at Camp Coconut.
